The Seven Daughters of Eve by Bryan Sykes
In this enjoyable book, Oxford University genetics professor Bryan Sykes tells the story of how he came to discover that almost all Europeans (and those descended from Europeans) can trace their ancestry to seven women. He names them Ursula, Xenia, Helena, Velda, Tara, Katrine and Jasmine. The stories of each of these women and the clans they led are told, along with a discussion of how our mitochondrial DNA can be used to determine which of the seven we may be descended from. The genetic issues are discussed in relatively simple, straightforward language that most non-scientists will find easy to follow. Overall The Seven Daughters of Eve is a fascinating, ground breaking work. Highly recommended.
